The Ukrainian Armed Forces have seized a wooden Russian drone that could be used to deceive air defence systems

The Ukrainian Defence Forces have seized a Russian wooden drone. This was reported by the Joint Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

The drone was shot down in early May in the Sumy region, which borders three regions of the Russian Federation. The homemade drone uses extruded foam and polystyrene.

The propulsion system is represented by a DLE-60 engine. It can be purchased in online shops. The Russian army probably uses such drones to divert Ukraine's air defence system during missile attacks and to launch kamikaze drones Shahed-131/136. Iranian UAVs usually fly through the Sumy region towards Kyiv or Poltava.

The Russians seem to have been inspired by the Syrian experience. In 2018, Russian troops in Syria were attacked by homemade drones, including wooden ones. You can see one of them in the photo above. The strength of such drones is the small effective dispersion area, which makes it difficult for radar stations to operate.
