Ukraine continues to strengthen its air defence and is now preparing to acquire an advanced NASAMS surface-to-air missile system.

Here's What We Know

We are talking about a contract worth around $285,000,000. It will include one AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar, a fire control centre, an unknown number of launchers, secure communications systems, and other equipment. The purchase of the weapon has already been approved by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency of the US Department of Defense (DSCA). Raytheon will execute the contract. Unfortunately, there is no timeframe for the deal yet.

Flashback

NASAMS is a mobile SAM system for the destruction of maneuvering targets at low and medium altitudes. The system was developed in the early 1990s by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence with the participation of the US company Raytheon. The SAM entered service with the Norwegian Armed Forces in 1994. The range of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles is 20-40 km and maximum altitude is 20 km. The cost of one such battery is about $65,000,000. By the way, the AFU currently has two NASAMS batteries.
