Chinese Volt Typhoon hackers install malware in US critical systems in Guam and the US

US authorities say Volt Typhoon hackers are receiving funding from the Chinese government. According to the agency, the cyber specialists attacked networks in critical sectors of US infrastructure, including the island of Guam.

The National Security Agency believes that China has been carrying out operations for years to obtain sensitive information from critical infrastructure organisations. The statement notes that the PRC is using "highly sophisticated" means to attack US critical infrastructure.

US officials believe the infiltration in Guam is part of a larger Chinese intelligence-gathering system. It also includes a spy balloon that flew over US territory earlier this year and was shot down off the Californian coast by an F-22 fighter jet.

Guam has come under the spotlight because the island is home to US Air Force base Andersen. It is assumed that in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, this military facility would be used by the US to respond. Moreover, it is also a key hub for ships in the Pacific Ocean.
