Searching for emails on a smartphone in Gmail will become much better, but it's not certain

Despite the plethora of email clients out there, the Gmail app is still one of the most popular of them all, so every update in which Google promises to make things better is a small cause for celebration. In this update, the mobile app will learn to display "top results" whenever you perform a search and Google at least claims that they are likely to be much more relevant and find exactly what you're looking for:

"When you search in Gmail, machine learning models will use your search term, recent emails, and other relevant factors to show you results that best match your search query," the company says in a blog post, "These results will now appear at the top of the list in a dedicated section, followed by all results sorted by most recent."

Of course, it's not like the "standard" Gmail search is bad and anyone has complained about it, but if Google can really improve it even further, then so be it.

The update with advanced search will start rolling out to regular users in a few weeks.
