US Air Force colonel 'misspoke' about AI-controlled drone killing operator during simulation
Colonel Tucker Hamilton of the 96th Test Squadron, US Air Force, told a story at the Air and Space Capabilities Summit of how a drone attacked a human operator during a simulation. As it turned out, the military "misspoke".
Here's What We Know
A statement to that effect has been sent out by the Royal Aeronautical Society, which organised the summit. The letter says that Tucker Hamilton "misspoke" during the presentation and the simulation did not actually take place.
The Colonel expressed a hypothetical possibility of a development based on plausible scenarios. By the way, Ann Stefanek, a spokeswoman for the US Air Force office at the Department of Defense, had also previously said that the service had not conducted any experiments involving AI-powered drones.
Tucker Hamilton said the US Air Force does not need simulations to understand that such situations can occur. While this is only a hypothetical example, it illustrates the real issues surrounding the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
