Here's What We Know

The decision is expected to be announced in three weeks. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to the US on 22 June.

Now India as the largest arms importer is almost half dependent on supplies from the Russian federation. The US wants to change the situation, although India recently took part in a joint exercise with Russia that did not please the US presidential administration much. In addition, the Asian country has increased its purchases of oil from Russia.

The White House wants to allow General Electric to launch a joint venture in India to produce GE F414 engines. The power units will be used in military aircraft of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

General Electric will transfer some technology to the Indian firm. HAL will become the licensed manufacturer of the GE F414. The Indian company intends to equip more than 350 of its fighter jets with aircraft engines over the next 20 years.
