Apple controls 59% of the smartphone market in North America - sales of Samsung and Motorola down sharply

Apple continues to lead the North American smartphone market. It increased shipments and its share in the first quarter of 2023, while Samsung and Motorola's figures fell sharply.

Apple managed to ship 20.3 million smartphones in the reporting period, up 2% from a year ago. The Cupertino-based company's share increased immediately by 8% to 59% amid an overall market contraction.

Samsung and Motorola, which are among the top 3, sharply worsened their performance. The South Korean company shipped 7.9 million models against 10.5 million a year earlier, a decline of 25%. The market share fell from 27% to 23%.

The US brand Motorola, which is owned by Lenovo, fell even more sharply. Shipments fell by 40% at once, from 4 million to 2.4 million units. The company now controls 7% versus 10% of the market.

Google, on the other hand, managed to increase sales by 20% to 1.4 million. TCL was also in the top five. All other companies delivered a total of 1.4 million smartphones, a third less than in the base period. Their total share was 4% of which Nokia and OnePlus accounted for about half. Overall, the North American market sagged by 11%. Shipments fell from 39.1 million to 34.6 million smartphones.
