In June, Google will stop supporting the desktop version of Google Drive on Windows 8/8.1
It has become known that Google will soon stop supporting its desktop application Google Drive on Windows 8 and 8.1. This was announced on the support page.
Here's What We Know
The Google Drive desktop application allows users to synchronise files and folders on their computers with cloud storage, as well as back up photos and videos to Google Photos. Starting in early August, Windows 8/8.1 users and those running the 32-bit version of Windows 10 will no longer be able to use the app to sync and back up their files.
However, this doesn't mean that they won't be able to continue using Google Drive in their browsers if they are using supported operating systems. However, they may be advised to upgrade their computers if they plan to continue to sync files using the application.
This update is part of the process of phasing out Windows 8 / 8.1 operating systems. In January, Microsoft stopped providing security updates and technical support for these legacy systems, and in February, Google released a version of Chrome that also no longer supports Windows 7 and Windows 8 / 8.1. Mozilla Firefox also plans to stop providing security updates for these operating systems next year.
