EU approves law to regulate artificial intelligence
The European Parliament has approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, bringing closer the adoption of comprehensive rules on the use of the technology. It is the world's first regulatory act aimed at protecting citizens from the potential risks of AI.
Here's What We Know
The bill was approved by 499 votes in favour and 28 against. The final text of the document must now be agreed by all EU branches of government: the Parliament, the Commission and the Council. Officials hope to reach a final agreement by the end of the year.
The law includes several degrees of risk for AI. Real-time biometric identification and "social scoring" will be banned outright.
Owners of generative systems like ChatGPT and Midjourney will be required to label content as created by AI. Developers must also ensure that their technology does not produce illegal content.
Creators of algorithms that fall into the low-risk group need only ensure that their use of AI is transparent.
