Ukraine receives SAMP/T air defence system which, together with Patriot, will shoot down Russian ballistic missiles
Four months after France announced that it would provide Ukraine with the SAMP/T surface-to-air missile system, the system has been delivered. This was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Here's What We Know
According to the French leader, the SAMP/T air-defence system is already deployed in Ukraine and is protecting key facilities and the lives of the country's citizens. The Armed Forces, the General Staff and the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine have not yet commented on the French President's statement.
SAMP/T is a Franco-Italian antiaircraft missile system, which includes launchers with Astere-30 missiles. Ukraine is to receive 700 anti-aircraft missiles and two Ground Master 200 radar stations.
The system is capable of intercepting air threats at an altitude of up to 25 km and a range of up to 100 km. Combined with the MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile system, SAMP/T can provide an even higher level of protection against Russian ballistic missiles.
Incidentally, it is possible that the new air defense system will also shoot down the hypersonic Kh-47M2 "Dagger" missiles, as it is essentially an Iskander ballistic missile launched from an aircraft. It is indeed capable of speeds in excess of Mach 5 (6174km/h), but it cannot maintain that speed throughout its flight. Patriot in Kyiv has already shot down 13 of the 13 KINJAL missiles, including 6 of them last weekend.
