Lockheed Skunk Works has hinted with a cryptic Instagram post at what a sixth-generation US fighter might look like
Skunk Works, a division of Lockheed Martin, has posted a cryptic drawing on Instagram to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Perhaps it's a hint at what the sixth-generation fighter will look like.
Here's What We Know
Skunk Works is believed to have shown a drawing of a sixth-generation manned tactical aircraft being developed under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) programme. Or at least has something to do with it.
At least one fighter demonstrator has previously been airborne. It is also known that there have been three Next Generation Air Demonstrators at various stages of testing over the years.
The published drawing is similar to images previously shown by Lockheed Martin and other defence contractors. In particular, we should note similar features in the deltoid shape of the glider without vertical and horizontal stabilisers.
The US Air Force wants to sign a contract next year to develop the fighter jet. Secretary Frank Kendall believes the aircraft will cost several hundred million dollars. Because of the high price tag, the NGAD programme will only sign a contract for one prototype.
The service wants about 200 sixth-generation fighters. They will replace the F-22 Raptor. The aircraft are expected to be ready in 2035.
