The US Navy is hoping to receive a new RIM-162 ESSM missile launcher. The developer is BAE Systems.
Here's What We Know
The US defence contractor will develop the next-generation Evolved SeaSparrow (NGELS) deck launcher. The company has been awarded a contract worth around $37m by the US Department of Defense.
The Evolved SeaSparrow (NGELS) will be operated by the US and allied navies. The launcher is designed to launch RIM-162 ESSM missiles. The Mk 41/48/56/57 vertical launch systems and Mk 29 container launchers are currently used for this purpose.
The developer of the RIM-162 ESSM is RTX. The medium-range ship-to-air missile is an evolution of the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow. It is equipped with a semi-active radar homing head.
The RIM-162 ESSM can shoot down targets at ranges over 50 km and is capable of a flight speed of over Mach 4 (4,900 km/h). In fiscal year 2021, the cost per anti-aircraft missile was almost $1.8 million.
