This month, the United Kingdom unveiled the Challenger 2 main battle tank in the Theatre Entry Standard (TES) variant. The combat vehicle was nicknamed Megatron.

Here's What We Know

The Challenger 2 TES Megatron is an advanced modification of the conventional Challenger 2 third generation tank. This version of the combat vehicle is designed for military operations in urban areas and in many ways repeats the design of the American M1 Abrams in the Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK) modification.

The United Kingdom first introduced the Challenger 2 TES Megatron in the summer of 2013. The latest version debuted in July 2016 at the Tank Fest event in Bovington. The front of the tank is fitted with Chobham armour, while the sides are fitted with dynamic protection.

Like the regular Challenger 2, the Megatron is equipped with a single 120mm L30A1 rifled cannon. In addition, the tank has a digital fire control system, night vision system, radiation protection and an auxiliary propulsion system to provide power to electrical systems when the main engine is switched off.

Another feature of the combat vehicle is the Brid Table antennas. The system is designed to fight against improvised explosive devices. It blocks radio signals that allow remote detonation of bombs.

The Challenger 2 TES Megatron was demonstrated at the Lulworth Range. The event was attended by many UK officials including Armed Forces Minister James Heappey, Chief of the General Staff Patrick Sanders and Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Antony Radakin.
