The Ukrainian Armed Forces have destroyed a very rare Arctic Tor-M2DT - Russia had only 12 such surface-to-air missile systems
Photos of the Russian air defence missile system Tor-M2DT, which was destroyed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, have appeared on social media. It is likely that this is the system that was eliminated in early February 2023 in the Kherson region.
Here's What We Know
The Ukrainian Defence Forces were only able to destroy two Tor-M2DTs. At the same time, the Russian Federation had only 12 surface-to-air missile systems in service. This version is designed to operate in difficult conditions.
"Tor-M2DT" is the Arctic version of the "Tor-M2" surface-to-air missile system. It was introduced about 6 years ago and is based on the DT-30 two-track tracked transporter. The Russian Defence Ministry first showed the system on 9 May 2017.
The Tor-M2DT launcher uses 9M338 anti-aircraft guided missiles. The kill zone is 1-16 kilometres in range and up to 10 kilometres in altitude. The surface-to-air missile system is capable of responding simultaneously to four air threats that fly at a speed of no more than 1,000 m/s.
