Chinese Vivo in the summer showed a prototype smartphone with a fingerprint scanner, built into the display. In commercial devices, this technology has not yet appeared, but Synaptics has already started manufacturing a new generation of sensors - Clear ID FS9500.

How it works?

The new Synaptics scanner is suitable for smartphones with OLED displays. The optical sensor is located under the pixels and uses the light emitted by them to capture the image of the surface of the finger. First, it recognizes the touch, after which the screen highlights the desired area. After that, the intelligent system checks the picture with the database of saved fingerprints, if the device matches, the device is unlocked. This way of identifying the user is twice as fast as the face recognition function (stone in the iPhone X kitchen garden).

In the Clear ID theory, the FS9500 can be placed anywhere on the screen. The component can be integrated into flexible panels, and the imprint will be recognized even on a wet display. Protective film sensor is also not a hindrance. Most importantly - it does not need to leave a place under the display , on the side or back of the gadget.

When to expect?

Synaptics announces cooperation with the largest manufacturers of the top-5 world rankings. The first devices with support for the new technology will be seen next year. Rumors persistently assert that the display scanner of fingerprints will receive the Korean flagship Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

In the already mentioned prototype, Vivo uses the Qualcomm ultrasound system, which will also be available to OEM partners next year. In the meantime, Xiaomi, Huawei and some other manufacturers decided to follow the example of Apple and bet on face recognition.
