Specialists of the profile portal iFixit dismantled a fresh monoblock Apple iMac Pro and evaluated it for maintainability.

Analysis of the cogs

The disassembled display of the Apple iMac Pro inside is half filled with casing of built-in speakers and a modest cooling system. The printed circuit board turned out to be compact, and the RAM modules are standard - the DDR4 ECC format with 288 contacts. It is possible to replace SSD disks, and standard drives have model number Apple EMC 3197 and are created on the chips of SanDisk company. The processor can also be replaced, but iFixit doubts that after that the computer will work.
The motherboard contains a Vega video card with 8 gigabytes of HBM2 memory, an Intel X723D733 E1 05780 microchip, an AQC107-B1-C AQUANTIA AQtion controller, two Intel JHL6540 Thunderbolt 3 controllers, a Genesys Logic GL3227A SD 4.0 controller and a Cirrus Logic CS42L63 DAC. Immediately there is a microprocessor Apple T2. He is responsible for the safety of the monoblock and its systems. The power supply unit received a power of 500 watts. According to experts iFixit this is not enough for a powerful processor and video card family Vega.

Repairability

Of the 10 possible points for the maintainability of the candy bar Apple iMac Pro received 3 points. It is scolded for the heavy access to the replaceable stuffing, the inability to replace or increase the RAM and 3D-card independently, and also the permanent replacement of the special tape with which the monitor is attached to the case, each time the computer is disassembled. Among the pluses is the replacement of SSD, CPU and RAM, but judging from the information above, it's very difficult or even impossible to do it yourself.
