Google extends Chromebook support for up to 10 years
Google has announced good news for Chromebook owners - support for these devices has been extended to 10 years.
Here's What We Know
Every Chromebook released after 2021 will now receive free monthly updates for 10 years. Previously, support lasted for 8 years. However, it starts when the device is certified, not when it gets into the hands of the user. And since Chromebooks are often used in education, due to the time spent on procurement and customisation, the support duration is usually around 5 years. So increasing the lifespan of a Chromebook will help educational institutions and businesses save well.
Google is also working on increasing the repairability of the gadgets. Chromebook parts are easy to find as part of the repair programme and it doesn't require a physical USB key. This is why, for example, in the US, 80 per cent of schools are repairing Chromebooks in-house to get them back in service faster.
In addition to this, Google will be releasing an update in the coming months aimed at making the devices more energy efficient. It will include features that will preserve battery life and switch off power-hungry processes.
