Apple blames third-party apps for iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max overheating and promises to fix the problem with a software update
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones have only been on sale for a little over a week, and the number of complaints about their overheating is skyrocketing on forums. Apple has responded to these complaints and promised to fix the problem.
Details
Apple says that the titanium frame is not the cause of the overheating. In fact, Apple has said that the titanium frame and aluminium support structure provides better heat dissipation than any previous-generation Pro models with stainless steel frames.
At the same time, Apple blamed third-party apps that overloaded the A17 Pro's processor for unknown reasons. These include Instagram, Uber, and the game Asphalt 9: Legends. The company has already contacted the developers of these apps. And Instagram has already submitted a fix as part of an app update released on Wednesday.
To fix the problem, Apple promises to release a software update. That firmware is iOS 17.1, which is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released in late October. It's possible the company will release a smaller update to fix the bug - such as OS 17.0.3.
That said, Apple won't reduce the performance of the A17 Pro chip as part of the bug fix.
Here's the company's full statement:
We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity. We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.
