Qualcomm showed a reference VR-helmet on Snapdragon 845
There can be no doubt that Snapdragon 845 will be the most popular chipset for flagship smartphones in 2018, but Qualcomm does not want to be limited to just one mobile segment. The company introduced a "reference" helmet of virtual reality on the basis of a new chipset.
What's new?
Like previous versions, the VR helmet with six degrees of freedom allows you to move freely around the room. The gadget does not require a connection to the computer or external sensors to track movements - the built-in cameras constantly scan the space around. But the performance significantly increased. Snapdragon 845 received the graphics accelerator Andreno 630, which is 30% faster and 30% more energy efficient than the previous generation GPU, and the display bandwidth (potentially a higher refresh rate) also increased 2.5 times.
Another innovation was the Adreno Foveation technology: the helmet will follow the direction of the sight and direct all the power of the graphics to the appropriate area. The clarity of the image will be higher where the user looks. This approach greatly saves computing resources.
What's next?
Qualcomm is not interested in the release of the corporate helmet virtual reality, but the proposed design can take as a basis for other manufacturers. Here HTC Vive Focus , for example, is built on the basis of the reference platform of the previous generation.
