Cruise/GM

Automakers General Motors, Cruise and Honda have announced plans to launch a robotaxi service in Japan as part of a joint venture. The service will go live in Tokyo in early 2026.

Here's What We Know

Initially, several dozen specially designed Cruise Origin vehicles are planned to be used. In the long term, their number will grow to 500 pieces.

Companies see great potential in the Japanese market because of the high demand for taxis and the shortage of drivers. The service may expand beyond Tokyo in the future.

This is a continuation of a long-standing co-operation between the three companies. In particular, Cruise Origin was developed by GM and Honda back in 2020.

Representatives of the auto giants noted that joining forces will allow for the effective implementation of the project and the introduction of innovative solutions in the field of mobility.

The launch of robotaxis in Japan will be an important milestone in the development of autonomous driving technologies and their commercialisation outside the US.
