Japan will purchase 10 Type 10 tanks and 16 Type 19 self-propelled howitzers at a cost of $212 million
Japan is ready to spend more than $200 million on the purchase of tanks and howitzers. This was reported by the Ministry of Defence of the Land of the Rising Sun.
Here's What We Know
Japan's Ground Self-Defence Forces intend to purchase additional Type 10 tanks and Type 19 self-propelled artillery systems of 155/52 calibre. The authorities will allocate approximately $212 million for the new armament in fiscal year 2024.
The technical parameters of the new tanks and howitzers will not differ from those already in service with the Japanese army. Also, the Ministry of Defence has no plans to modernise them in the near future.
The defence budget for fiscal year 2024 allocates $112 million for the purchase of 10 main battle tanks. The purchase of 16 self-propelled artillery units will cost the budget $100 million.
Japan currently has 111 Type 10 tanks, deliveries of which began in 2012. They are expected to gradually displace the Type 74 and Type 90.
