OpenAI has been in discussion about when to release a tool to identify images generated by their DALL-E 3 model. However, a decision is not expected anytime soon.
Here's What We Know
According to OpenAI researcher Sandhini Agarwal, while the detector is highly accurate, it has not yet met the company's internal quality standards.
Earlier, the company's chief technology officer Mira Murati said the detector's accuracy is 99 per cent for unmodified images and over 95 per cent for edited images.
However, the release of the tool could cause controversy. This was the case with the AI text detector, which OpenAI had to shut down due to low accuracy.
The company is also discussing the philosophical question of what to consider an image created by artificial intelligence. For example, does a picture fall under this definition if it has undergone many edits and additions with real content?
Therefore, OpenAI is not yet ready to make a decision on releasing an image detector from DALL-E 3. The company aims to maximise the accuracy and ethicality of its AI tools.
