Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force is preparing to receive a new submarine. Kawasaki Heavy Industries has launched the JS Raigei submarine.

Here's What We Know

The Japanese company held a launching ceremony in the city of Kobe, where submarine production is established. The event was attended by representatives of the Maritime Self-Defence Force and the Japanese Ministry of Defence.

JS Raigei is the fourth submarine of the Taigei class. It took approximately two and a half years between the start of construction and launch. The air-independent propulsion system is represented by lithium-ion batteries, which allow the submarine to stay underwater for a long time without rising to the surface.

JS Raigei is 84 metres long and has a displacement of 3,000 tonnes. The submarine has a maximum speed of more than 30 kilometres per hour underwater. The submarine has six Type 18 torpedo tubes for striking the enemy and will be armed with Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
