AI training workers call on US Congress to protect them from surveillance and low pay

Workers involved in processing data to train artificial intelligence have demanded that the US Congress protect their rights amid an upcoming meeting between senators and AI leaders.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, they called for a "dystopian future" with exploitative labour, surveillance and low wages for people training AI algorithms to be prevented. The contributions of these workers are often invisible but critical to the progress of AI technology, they said.

The letter was published ahead of another bipartisan AI Insight Forum with technology leaders to discuss AI regulation.

Turkopticon, a group representing workers at Amazon Mechanical Turk, low-wage contractors who train AI, urged lawmakers to protect their right to collectively bargain and shield them from surveillance in the workplace. They argue this would make technological innovation more equitable.
