The modernised JAS 39 Gripen E fighter has a larger wing for increased manoeuvrability and can carry more missiles
Saab recently handed over the first production fighter JAS 39 Gripen E to Sweden, and now we know about some of its features.
Here's What We Know
One of the main features of the modernised fourth-generation fighter is the enlarged wing. Such a feature allows you to increase the level of manoeuvrability of the Swedish aircraft. In addition, it can now carry more payloads.
Increasing the wing area is possible by increasing the ailerons and elevons. In addition, the Swedish specialists had to change the flight computer software and increase the area of the nose plumage.
The JAS 39 Gripen E can now carry more missiles and bombs:
- four RBS 15 missiles + two air-to-air missiles;
- seven Meteor missiles + two IRIS-T missiles;
- 16 small diameter bombs (without additional fuel tanks).
Sweden now has one production JAS 39 Gripen E fighter and two prototypes. The aircraft will undergo operational testing and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025.
