UK invests $273m in artificial intelligence supercomputer in bid to compete with US and China

The UK government is investing £225m ($273m) to build a powerful supercomputer for artificial intelligence. This demonstrates the country's ambition to take a leading position in AI alongside the US and China.

Here's What We Know

The supercomputer, called Isambard-AI, will be built at the University of Bristol. It will be the most powerful computer in the country - 10 times more powerful than its existing counterparts.

The Isambard-AI will contain 5,448 specialised NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips for AI. It will also be connected to the new Dawn supercomputer in Cambridge, which runs on 1,000 Intel chips.

The combined computing power is expected to enable breakthroughs in AI modelling, drug development, nuclear energy and other fields.

The supercomputers will be operational in the summer of 2024. They will be used for safety testing of advanced AI models and scientific research.
