On the eve of the Steam devices section of the devices, the item Steam Machines has disappeared - those same gaming computers running SteamOS. Users already decided that Valve finally abandoned their initiative, but the company claims the opposite.

What happened?

According to Valve employees, the Steam Machines page still exists , but it was removed from the main one due to low user traffic. However, this is more of a consequence than a real reason - no one is interested in "glands" that have not been updated since 2016. Even if someone decides to follow the link in the store, they can no longer be found on sale.

But SteamOS does not go anywhere. Valve still wants to create a free gaming platform based on Linux. Part of this work is to provide full support for the Vulkan API. The developers hinted at other useful innovations for the Linux ecosystem in the near future, but so far without details.

Recall that the performance SteamOS in games was significantly lower than on Windows 10. In Steam statistics, the operating system is not displayed, but the total share of Linux is only 0.33%.

SteamOS needs Valve at least in case Microsoft decides to make Windows a closed platform. The co-founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney (Tim Sweeney) believes that this may well happen in the future.
