Three years ago Sony released an unusual Digital Paper System (DPT-S1) tablet in electronic ink, close to A4 size sheet. The other day in Japan, the announcement of the second generation of the gadget - Sony DPT-RP1 with a clearer display and other improvements.

What changed

Sony DPT-RP1 is also equipped with 13.3-inch panel E Ink, but the resolution has grown from 1600x1200 to 2200x1650 pixels. Supports 16 grayscale and touch input - on the non-slip surface of the display you can make notes with the stylus supplied. There is an NFC-chip for unlocking using a smartphone. The format is supported only one - PDF, but there is a program for the PC that converts pages of websites and documents to the desired form and automatically sends them to the tablet. The dimensions of the case are 224x302.6x5.9 mm, in thickness this is equivalent to a stack of 30 paper pages. The device weighs 349 g. Of 16 GB of internal memory, 11 GB are available to the user. One charge of the battery is enough for a month of work with an hour of reading a day.

Question price

The predecessor of the reader cost $ 1000, and the new Sony DPT-RP1 will cost $ 700 and will be available from June 5 in Japan. The model is oriented to the corporate sector, although anyone can buy it in the company's corporate store. This purchase makes sense, if good autonomy and excellent visibility in the sun are important. Among the alternatives is a 10.2-inch reMarkable tablet for $ 430 on pre-order (its usual price is $ 720 for a full set with a case and a stylus). Deliveries will have to wait until September, but what if the startup team fails to meet these deadlines?

Do not forget about the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro for $ 800, which can do much more.
