HIMARS and MLRS can now destroy targets within 500km radius - Lockheed Martin has begun delivery of new PrSM missiles to replace ATACMS
The US Army has begun receiving Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). This is a new long-range weapon for the M142 HIMARS high-mobility artillery rocket systems and M270 MLRS multiple launch rocket systems.
Here's What We Know
The delivery of the first batch of PrSMs was announced by Lockheed Martin on its official website on 11 December 2023. The transfer of the PrSM to the US Army followed successful qualification testing of the weapon in November 2023.
The PrSM in its current version is capable of engaging targets within a range of 500 kilometres. In the future, the range could reach 1,000 kilometres and even exceed this milestone. The new weapon is a replacement for the ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, which have a range of up to 300 kilometres.
Early operational readiness was achieved through the delivery of PrSM Increment 1 missiles. Lockheed Martin is now considering Increment 2 with a multi-mode homing system, and Increment 3 will have an increased warhead mass without sacrificing range. A range of 1,000 kilometres will be achieved in Increment 4.
