LG and automotive component supplier Magna unveil control module for future cars
LG, together with Magna, has developed a mobile platform of the future for cars that combines Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Autonomous Driving (AD) and IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) technologies. The platform provides a flexible solution for automakers, improves safety and provides interactive experiences for drivers and passengers. This technology is expected to be used for the first time in cars in the 2027 model year. This joint project allows LG and Magna to proactively respond to market trends and deliver innovative solutions to meet customer needs.
The collaboration, which began in 2023, combines LG and Magna's technological advances to provide a better user experience in the car. The cockpit computing system has been successfully integrated into a single chip (SoC), which is a flexible and efficient solution for OEMs. The single electronic module supports multiple IVI systems and ADAS/AD service integration with fewer electronic units and a compact design. It is a solution that is suitable for the transition to a software-defined vehicle (SDV) and optimising its electrical/electronic architecture. The introduction of a single module allows for real-time interaction with a significant amount of data between different services.
The joint work also includes developments in the field of human-machine interface (HMI), which allows drivers and passengers to interact intuitively through in-car displays, digital clusters, augmented reality displays (AR-HUD) and real-time software. The solution can be flexibly adapted to each car manufacturer's needs for integrated communications and IVI systems.
What is ADAS?
ADAS, which stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, includes a variety of technology systems designed to improve driving safety and comfort. These systems may include, for example, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning systems, adaptive cruise control and other features that help drivers avoid accidents and maintain road safety. In addition to ensuring safety, ADAS can also help reduce driver workload, which is especially important in long journeys or heavy traffic.
What is Autonomous Driving?
Autonomous Driving (or also called Automated Driving) refers to the use of various technologies and systems in cars that allow them to perform certain driving functions without direct human control. Autonomous driving can include functions ranging from partially automated systems, such as parking assistance, to fully autonomous systems that can drive independently in different road conditions. The development and implementation of autonomous driving technologies is aimed at improving the safety, efficiency and comfort of driving on the roads.
What is IVI Technology?
IVI, or In-Vehicle Infotainment, is a term used in the automotive industry to describe systems that combine entertainment and information delivery to drivers and passengers. IVI systems use audio/video interfaces, touchscreens, keyboards and other types of devices to provide these services. These systems can include GPS navigation, media playback, hands-free calling, Internet connectivity and more. IVI systems are integrated entertainment and connectivity systems found in today's cars that provide a wide range of functions.
