The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned that artificial intelligence technology will soon make it possible to create phishing emails and password reset requests virtually indistinguishable from real ones.
Here's What We Know
According to NCSC experts, fraudsters will be able to generate convincing fake messages by 2025 thanks to the availability of generative AI models like ChatGPT. Previously, humans were able to recognise phishing by errors in text, but AI capabilities are overcoming this barrier.
In addition, the NCSC predicts that AI-based ransomware attacks are on the rise. Already, attackers are using chatbots to craft more believable phishing emails.
At the same time, AI technologies can also be used for defence - detecting cyberattacks and developing secure systems. The British government is urging companies to strengthen cybersecurity and prepare incident plans.
