If fantasy were real: Dragon's Dogma 2 developers talk about their approach to creating the game's world

IGN journalists have published a new interview with the developers of Dragon's Dogma 2 RPG, who told us what principles were used to create the world of the game.

Here's What We Know

Game Director Itsuno Hideaki and Art Director Daigo Ikeno (Ikeno Daigo) said that although the events of Dragon's Dogma 2 unfold in a fantasy world filled with magical creatures and other elements of fantasy, the main goal of the developers was to create the most realistic game.

This approach required Capcom staff to carefully study medieval paintings, landscapes, architecture, books, fashions of the time, customs and much more. In general, the atmosphere of Dragon's Dogma 2 is supposed to remind gamers of classic medieval Central European fantasy.

The concept of the world parallel to the one in the first part also added complexity. The developers needed to transfer many locations from the game of 2012, without making drastic changes to them, but without copying them.

The developers' desire for realism also affected the design of creatures inhabiting the world of Dragon's Dogma 2. Capcom designers wondered what goblins, dragons and other mythical creatures would look like in real life, and used this factor as a starting point.

Recently the developers talked about adding a new race of large anthropomorphic cats from the Battahl people, and now they reminded about elves. Especially for them they invented a unique language, the phonetic sound of which resembles Scandinavian dialects.

When We Can Expect It

Dragon's Dogma 2 will be released on 22 March 2024 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
