European Commission launches investigation into popular social network TikTok
The investigation focuses on algorithms that promote addiction, harmful content, and the privacy of users, including minors. The European Commission is focusing on examining the effectiveness of age verification tools, as well as aspects of the platform's design and operation that may negatively impact users.
This decision was taken due to concerns about possible violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), in particular with regard to the safety and protection of minors. The investigation also covers aspects of advertising transparency and access to data.
TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have recently made significant changes to their platform to comply with the DSA. However, in the wake of this investigation, they may face new challenges regarding user privacy and security in Europe.
After opening the proceedings, the commission will continue to collect evidence. TikTok has introduced new reporting options for harmful content and has abandoned personalised advertising for EU users aged 13 to 17.
