Samsung has unveiled its 256GB SD Express microSD card, which boasts an impressive sequential read speed of up to 800MB/s.

Here's What We Know

Samsung has introduced the industry's first new high-performance microSD card based on the SD Express interface. Featuring low power consumption and firmware technology optimised for high performance and temperature management, the Samsung SD Express microSD card delivers SSD equivalent performance in a compact form factor. While read speeds for traditional UHS-1-based microSD cards were limited to 104MB/s, the SD Express was able to increase this to 985MB/s.

Thanks to the PCIe Gen3x1 protocol, SD Express delivers blazing-fast read speeds of 800 MB/s, which can rival even SATA SSDs (up to 560 MB/s). This is 1.4 times faster than traditional SSDs and more than four times faster than conventional UHS-1 memory cards (up to 200MB/s). Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology ensures optimal performance and reliability by regulating the memory card's temperature even during prolonged use.

Samsung is also starting mass production of 1TB UHS-1 microSD memory cards. Utilising eight layers of Samsung V-NAND 8th Generation 1TB memory, this microSD card offers unprecedented storage potential. It is also rigorously tested to ensure durability with six protective features including waterproof, extreme temperature resistance, drop resistance, abrasion resistance, X-ray protection and anti-magnetic protection.

When We Can Expect It

The 256GB SD Express microSD SD card will go on sale later this year, while the 1TB UHS-1 microSD card will go on sale in the third quarter of this year.
