Google Pixel has overtaken Samsung to become the third most popular smartphone maker in Japan
Google's Pixel smartphones have shown phenomenal growth in the Japanese market in 2023, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). The Pixel's annual sales growth was an astounding 527 per cent, cementing Google's position as the country's third largest smartphone maker.
Here's What We Know
While the overall Japanese smartphone market shrank in 2023, Google increased its presence in the country. Pixel smartphones have gained more than 10% of the Japanese smartphone market share in 2023, up from just 1.5% in 2022. This represents a 527% year-on-year growth.
Google's Pixel line of smartphones has surpassed even Samsung's offerings to become the third largest smartphone brand in Japan, behind only Apple and Sharp. Google's success in Japan is partly due to its strategic partnership with carrier Docomo, which began in early 2023.
Analysts predict that Google is likely to maintain its momentum in the Japanese market throughout 2024. They also expect other global players such as Lenovo, which recently acquired FCNT, to increase their presence in Japan.
Part of the growth can also be attributed to Google's smart stocks and marketing in the country. In January, Google teamed up with Hangyodon to promote the new "Mint" colour for the Pixel 8.
The surge in popularity of Pixel smartphones highlights Google's growing strength in the global smartphone market. As the company continues to improve its hardware and software offerings, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain its success in Japan and beyond.
