After various rumours and leaks, Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy A55, the top-of-the-line mid-budget model of the A. The smartphone comes with a metal frame, a powerful new processor and some features usually found in the premium Galaxy S series phones.

Here's What We've Seen

The Galaxy A55 has been given an externally similar design to the flagship S24 lineup. Compared to last year's A54, the new smartphone has more premium body materials. It now features a metal frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ tempered glass on both sides.

The novelty has a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The display has Vision Booster technology that adjusts colours and contrast in sunlight. The screen will have a peak brightness of 1000 nits in direct sunlight and even higher in HDR scenes. There will be an optical fingerprint sensor embedded under the screen.

As previously speculated, the Galaxy A55 is powered by a new 4nm Exynos 1480 processor with a maximum clock speed of 2.75GHz and an Xclipse 530 graphics core based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture. It is reported to have a 15 per cent faster CPU and 32 per cent faster GPU. The phone gets 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of internal storage. There will still be a 12/256GB version, but it might not be released in all markets. A microSD card slot for up to 1TB will also be present.

The cameras in the Galaxy A55 have also become a bit improved. On the back, the smartphone has three cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS and autofocus, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel macro camera. A 32MP selfie camera is mounted on the front. The 50MP and 12MP cameras can record 4K video at 30fps with VDIS (EIS for video stabilisation). Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI ISP) inside the Exynos 1480 provides improved low-light imaging. The Galaxy A55 also has a Night Portrait mode thanks to its Nightography feature. This is the first Galaxy A phone with 12-bit Super HDR video for wider dynamic range and deeper colours.

The new Galaxy A55 will get a 5,000mAh battery and will support 25W fast charging. Wireless charging has not been announced. The phone also gets IP67 dust and water resistance, stereo speakers, GPS, 5G, dual SIM slot, eSIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and USB Type-C 2.0 port.

Samsung will ship the Galaxy A55 with One UI 6.1-based Android 14 pre-installed. The smartphone will get four major Android OS updates and security updates for five years. The system includes Auto Blocker, Samsung Knox and Samsung Knox Vault.

The dimensions of the smartphone will be: 161.1 x 77.4 x 8.2 mm and weighs 213 grams.

The phone will be available in four colours: navy blue, ice blue, lilac and lemon.

In Europe, the Galaxy A55 will be priced from €479 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and €529 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant.
