Elon Musk and his company X are planning to launch an app for Amazon and Samsung smart TVs. This is a step towards competing with YouTube and reinventing itself as a video platform.

Here's What We Know

According to a company source, the app will launch next week and it looks "identical" to YouTube's TV app. Musk's goal is to incentivise users to watch "longer videos on a bigger screen".

Among the other services Musk wants to compete with, the source cited live streaming platform Twitch, encrypted messenger app Signal and social media platform Reddit.

Platform X said the new video app will feature a video feature reminiscent of TikTok's infinite full-screen browsing.

The news of the upcoming X app has not gone unnoticed by YouTube. While YouTube has yet to release official statements, industry analysts expect them to step up efforts to retain their user base and creator community.

This looming rivalry will likely benefit content consumers. Both platforms will have a vested interest in offering the best possible experience, leading to potential improvements in content quality, features and perhaps even monetisation options for authors.
