Global IT failure paralyses McDonald's restaurant chain worldwide
The system failure led to the temporary closure of McDonald's restaurants in the US, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and the UK and prevented online orders.
Here's What We Know
A company spokesperson said that the outage was not caused by a cyberattack but by configuration issues with a third-party vendor. Many markets have already resumed operations, and some locations are still recovering.
It is noted that McDonald's has more than 41,800 stores worldwide, of which almost 13,500 are located in the United States, which is the company's largest market.
Among the other countries that have also been affected, Japan has the largest number of McDonald's restaurants, with nearly 3,000. The United Kingdom is second with about 1,500 restaurants, and Australia is third with just over 1,000 restaurants.
This malfunction is just one of the challenges McDonald's is facing earlier this year. In its latest earnings presentation, the company noted that the war in the Middle East and boycotts of some markets in the region are having a negative impact on its business. In addition, the CEO noted some negative impact on sales in other Muslim countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
