The US Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating Meta
According to the Wall Street Journal, federal investigators are looking into the role of Meta social media in possibly facilitating drug trafficking.
Here's What We Know
According to unofficial sources, prosecutors are looking into whether platforms such as Facebook and Instagram enabled and profited from illegal drug transactions.
Last year, prosecutors sent Meta subpoenas and demanded documents about the presence of illegal drug content on their platforms or illegal sales.
A Meta spokesperson stated that selling illegal drugs is against their policy and the company is actively working to remove such content from their services. He also confirmed cooperation with law enforcement agencies to combat this phenomenon.
The WSJ noted that other platforms, such as TikTok, have not responded to inquiries about the investigation.
The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, announced a joint effort with Meta, Snap and other companies to combat online synthetic drug activity. The investigation into this matter is ongoing and further accountability and measures are expected to be taken to prevent similar situations in the future.
