Next year, Apple plans to introduce the iPhone 17 with an anti-reflective display that will be more scratch-resistant than the ceramic glass used in the iPhone 15 models.

Here's What We Know

A Chinese Weibo insider, Instant Digital, has claimed that the iPhone 17's outer glass will have an "ultra-hard" anti-reflective layer that is more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield glass in the iPhone 15, which was developed by Corning in conjunction with Apple. According to the insider, the coating equipment has already been transferred to China's supply chain, but the upcoming iPhone 16 series will not feature the new coating as the development of the devices is almost complete.

Samsung recently unveiled its latest Galaxy S24 Ultra, which features Gorilla Glass Armor display protection, also developed by Corning. According to Corning, the Armor panel reduces reflections by 75 per cent compared to a conventional glass surface. The company also claims the panels offer more than 4 times the scratch resistance of competing aluminosilicate glass.

It's unclear whether Apple plans to use Gorilla Glass Armor for the iPhone 17, but from what the Chinese insider reports, it seems to indicate that Apple may offer this glass or a comparable one to Gorilla Glass Armor. The company could supply Apple with equivalent technology that would be promoted under a different name. Corning has long been a supplier to Apple and Gorilla Glass is used in devices across Apple's product line.

It remains to be seen how Apple's future panel will stand up to Corning Gorilla Armor in terms of overall durability and clarity, as the company still has plenty of time to add significant improvements in time for the release of the iPhone 17.
