The most detailed image of a black hole in the Milky Way reveals the secrets of its magnetic fields
Astronomers reveal new depths of a mysterious black hole in the Milky Way with the most detailed image ever created. A new technological marvel reveals traces of magnetic field swirls around SgrA*.
Here's What We Know
The image, created by a team of 150 astronomers, is striking in its clarity and detail. The scientists used the Event Horizon Telescope network of radio telescopes and obtained an image that reveals the swirling magnetic fields around the black hole.
Compared to previous images obtained in 2022, the new image provides much greater clarity and detail. Interestingly, the image confirms the presence of swirling magnetic fields similar to those observed around the black hole M87*.
The astronomers also discovered that SgrA* may have a hidden jet, suggesting that the processes that govern the black hole's power supply may be common to supermassive black holes.
The use of polarised light allowed us to show the details of the black hole's event horizon, revealing another layer of its mystery.
