Activision investigates cyberattack aimed at stealing player passwords
Activision, one of the leading video game developers, has launched an investigation into a hacker attack aimed at stealing player credentials. According to information from our colleagues at TechCrunch, hackers are installing malware on victims' computers, after which they steal passwords from game accounts and cryptocurrency wallets.
Here's What We Know
At the moment, the specific goals of the attackers are unclear, except for stealing passwords. Activision Blizzard specialists are actively working on eliminating the malware and restoring the accounts of affected players. However, not enough data has yet been collected on how the malware is spreading.
Activision spokesperson, Delaney Simmons, said that the company is aware of the possible threat of player credentials being compromised due to malware obtained by downloading or using unauthorised software. He emphasised that the company's servers remain secure and undamaged.
It seems that the hacking campaign was first discovered by Zeebler, a developer who develops cheat software for Call of Duty. He said he learnt about the hacking campaign when one of his clients had his account for his software stolen. Zeebler then began investigating and discovered a database of stolen credentials that the hackers were amassing.
