Here's What We Know
The market of computer and console games grew in 2023 and reached $93.5 billion in revenue. However, the top 10 most popular games on each platform are games that are more than a year old. Fortnite won the gold medal on all platforms. Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike 2, Roblox, Minecraft, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, Valorant, and Call of Duty also remain popular. Starfield is the only new game to appear on the list of popular games. It took the 8th place on Xbox.
80% of the total playing time was spent in just 66 games. 60% of the total time was spent on games that are 6 years old or more. In 2023, Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft, and GTA V accounted for 27% of all game time in a year.
23% of game time was spent on games that are 2 years old or less, but more than half of them are sequels that come out every year, such as sports simulators. Only 8% of game time was spent on new, non-annual sequels, such as Diablo IV or Baldur's Gate III.
"It will become increasingly difficult to expand the player base of a game," Newzoo's report says, "especially in our current landscape, which is dominated by evergreen titles and robust content pipelines.
