Yahoo has acquired AI news app Artifact from the co-founders of Instagram
Artifact
Yahoo has bought Artifact, a news app developed by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Financial terms of the deal, which closed last week, were not disclosed.
Here's What We Know
Artifact uses artificial intelligence algorithms to personalise and recommend news content based on users' interests. The app has gained popularity due to its quality system for discovering relevant stories.
However, Artifact, which launched in January 2023, failed to garner a large enough audience despite adding social features. In January this year, Systrom and Krieger announced plans to shut down the project.
Yahoo is now integrating Artifact's technology, including AI-assisted personalisation, into its news products such as Yahoo News. Systrom said artificial intelligence allowed Artifact to "provide users with a better experience of discovering great content."
Artifact's co-founders will advise Yahoo on the integration process. This isn't Yahoo's first experience using AI in news - the company previously bought and shuttered Summly, an app for automatically summarising news.
