The Matrix franchise will be joined by another film, but under a completely new direction
The "Matrix" sci-fi franchise hasn't said it all yet and is gearing up for a new film addition. This time the project will be handled by "The Martian" screenwriter and "The Cabin in the Woods" director Drew Goddard.
Here's What We Know
Surprisingly, Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, who created the franchise 25 years ago, will not be involved in the upcoming "Matrix," though Lana is still "keeping her hand in" and is listed as an executive producer.
President of the production department at Warner Bros. Jesse Ehrman assured in a statement that the upcoming sci-fi project will be based solely on Goddard's own love for the franchise:
"Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters".
Goddard himself stated that "The Matrix" has left an indelible imprint on his life: "It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.".
Goddard is best known for his work on the scripts for "Cloverfield", "World War Z" and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Martian". He wrote and directed "The Cabin in the Woods" as well as "Bad Times at the El Royale." So it's safe to assume that the upcoming film in the world of "Matrix" is in good hands.
When We Can Expect It
