It's official: : 'Dune' returns with a third film based on 'Dune Messiah'
No one doubted that after the colossal success of the first two "Dune" films, Legendary Pictures would announce a third. Now the development of "Dune 3" is officially confirmed, so Denis Villeneuve will be able to close his gestalt.
Here's What We Know
Of course, Villeneuve will direct the film adaptation of Frank Herbert's second book, "Dune Messiah", and he's also taken on another project called "Nuclear War: A Scenario". But, the good news is that "Nuclear War" should be released after "Dune 3", which shows the significant priority of "Messiah" for the director and Legendary.
According to the director, work on the script is already underway, which isn't surprising since Villeneuve originally stated that he intended to make three "Dune" films and was sketching out an outline for the third film while still working on the first.
Recall that the first instalment struggled at the box office due to simultaneous streaming releases and pandemic-weary audiences, but "Dune 2" performed very well. As of right now, it is the highest-grossing film of 2023 at $630.2 million worldwide, and has a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% audience score.
When We Can Expect It
You'll have to be patient on this one. Although no official release date has been announced yet, it is suspected that after Villeneuve's statements about his intention to make one more film before returning to the deserted Arrakis, we can expect "Messiah" no sooner than 2027.
