YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has sternly warned OpenAI that using their video content to train AI models like Sora would be a "clear violation" of the platform's terms of use.

Here's What We Know

Mohan noted that creators who post their work on YouTube expect to abide by the terms of service, including a ban on downloading transcripts or video clips. Such actions are in direct violation of YouTube's "rules of the road" for content.

The issue of using data from YouTube videos to train AI models, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and DALL-E, has previously caused much controversy and uncertainty. OpenAI spokesperson Mira Murati acknowledged that the company was unsure of the data sources used by its new Sora tool.

Meanwhile, OpenAI's competitor Google, which owns YouTube, is taking a more cautious approach. According to Mohan, Google's Gemini AI model only uses videos that have been authorised by copyright holders.
