Amazon has added Andrew Ng, a renowned AI specialist who has previously worked at Google and Baidu, to its board of directors. This comes amid growing competition between major tech companies to attract users in the field of generative AI.

Here's What We Know

Amazon is facing pressure from competitors such as Microsoft, which has partnered with OpenAI and integrated ChatGPT technology into its products. Amazon's Alexa voice assistant is also in a race with chat tools based on generative AI from OpenAI and Google.

Eun's appointment to Amazon's board of directors took effect on 9 April. This follows recent job cuts at the company due to macroeconomic factors such as inflation and high interest rates.

Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy said the company will continue to optimise costs, including in cloud services and logistics, despite expected improvements in these areas.

The addition of Eun, an AI expert, to the board underscores the importance for Amazon of strengthening its position in the fast-growing generative AI segment.
