China has announced its intention to stop using processors manufactured by foreign companies in its telecommunications infrastructure, continuing its strategy of gradually reducing its dependence on foreign technologies.

Here's What We Know

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has ordered the country's telecoms providers to replace all chips made by foreign manufacturers in their networks and infrastructure by 2027.

This decisive action by China comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions with the US in the semiconductor industry.

This decision will hit US manufacturers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which have historically been the main suppliers of processors to China, the hardest. However, it is also expected to stimulate the development of domestic manufacturers such as Huawei, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) and HiSilicon.
