Portuguese F-16s intercept Russian aircraft near NATO territory
Portuguese F-16 fighter jets patrolling the Baltic Sea intercepted and escorted two Russian aircraft that flew into NATO airspace without an invitation.
Here's What We Know
The F-16s took off from the Joint Air Operations Centre in Judem, in western Germany, to intercept the intruders.
During this mission, the Portuguese pilots not only completed their interception task, but also confirmed that the Russian aircraft were operating without a flight plan. They were escorted until they flew into the Kaliningrad region.
It is worth noting that such events are a reminder to NATO that it needs to be vigilant and ready to react quickly at all times. The Alliance has officially described the incident as a "strong signal of vigilance" that demonstrates the close cohesion of its members.
